cats scratching the new dining chairs

We bought new ones because they'd ruined the old ones! I'm using the training spray on the chairs and at the moment I'm putting them on top of the table when we go to bed but they have still scratched two of the sides (i don't know which cat, we have two).
What else can i do to deter them? I don't have the option of leaving them away from the chairs because of the style of the house and the position of the cat flap.
DH is telling to to get rid of them, that's how cross he is sad

Our cat stays away from things sprayed with feliway spray but change stresses some cats out and they scratch to show this.

Ive seen sticky strips you attach to furniture which stick to their paws but I've not used them.

Do they have a scratch post each? Mine loves his scratch post and it distracts him from out mattress. Sometimes.

Thank you. I'm just going to the big pet store now. I'll try and get some of that spray, and the sticky things.

We put tinfoil on the part of the sofa that our cat scratched, I read somewhere that they don't like the feel of it. Bought her a scratching post that day and tempted her into putting her paws on it by putting cat treats on the top. After a couple of days we removed the foil and she never scratched it again.

right, I'll try that then Bella as i couldn't get any sticky things today from the pet shop, nor any Feliway

Do they have good scratching posts? What kind of material are the dining room chairs, and can you get a scratching post made out of similar material? (e.g. wood vs fabric). Different cats prefer different things. Also, some cats don't like to share their scratching posts (the scratching marks territory, amongst other things) so it could be that you need more of them. Also, can you temporarily put a cover over the chair so that they don't make it a habit? Good luck.

thanks for the replies guys.
Chairs are leather but the new scratching post that I put down yesterday, covered in Cat Nip spray, is being used! Hurrah!
I've seen both cats use it too so hopefully one will be enough although I'm not adverse to buying another. I made a fuss of both of them too when i saw them using it and tried to play with them (it has a ball thingy handing down from the top). I'm still spraying the chairs every other day with the deterrent spray and I put them on top of the table when we go to bed.

Fingers crossed this effort will pay off.

Try citrus, they dislike the smell, that said felieway, citrus spray, a choice of scratcher and mine still prefer the sofas. My leather sofas are absolutely ruined from scratching though, I figure you just have to put up with it if you have cats. Mine have loads of scratchers and cat trees, but they still like a good scratch on the leather...Good job dh loves the cats too, really!

Everytime my cats have scratched something I didn't want them to scratch, I simply put a scratching post nearby. They always prefer to use the post.

It is very natural for them to scratch, you need to provide outlets for their behaviour.

thanks for the extra replies. So far, so good with what we've done. Cat B obviously loves the smell of the cat nip too as he even taken to sleeping at the foot of the scratch post!
